Ocean Song

Evoking lost tales of jewelled waters, glittering lagoons and warm turquoise seas, of worlds hidden to those above the surface, Ocean Song is a lavishly decorated journal created to tell a story of mystery beneath the waves. The main feature of Ocean Song is the carvings on the front and back covers. She is a very large journal at approximately 8½ x 10½ x almost 4″. It is hand carved from beautiful English Yew, and was created with the look of the old tallships in mind, when the existence of mermaids and sea monsters were accepted by many sailors. Also, completely unique as a piece of art as this is the first time I have worked with wood in this way, which will never be a duplicated occurence.
Due to some technical problems I had with the filming of the video, there are sort of 2 versions of the background story. The more condensed version you will hear on the youtube film in the form of Lilly recounting some of her memories, and we hear Uncle Lars’ letter to her from many years ago. The original script was to be the 2 characters talking together on the beach and actually gives a little more detail to the journal’s origins, and more scope for detective work. So this may be elaborated on again in the future if I ever make another version of Ocean Song. For now, please enjoy the photographs and take a look at the film on the link below.
